Fast-growing vigorous shrub that produces edible flowers and leaves. Harvest the calyces (flower casing) in late Sumer/early Autumn to make jam, tea or a syrup that can be used as a decorative and tasty addition to champagne. Green leaves can be used as a spicy spinach.
The flowers are high in Vitamins C and the entire plant has numerous medicinal properties. Plants die back to ground level in winter and may come back in spring in warmer climates but second year plants do not produce as abundantly, so plants are best treated as an annual.
